A worrying month for the beekeeper, although our bees have survived the rigors of winter this is the time when they can die of starvation. Hopefully this will not happen because the beekeeper has kept them well supplied with food during the previous autumn. Activity in the hive has increased substantially, with the lengthening days the queen increases her rate of lay, more food is required within the hive but the workers will not find nectar, in any quantity, outside of the hive. Our bees are totally dependent on the stores held within the hive.
On a fine day, when the bees are flying, take a quick look (without disturbing any frames) for sealed stores. If none are visible feed with syrup.
