Leslie Thorne Award

The Leslie Thorne award is presented annually to the most improved young beekeeper within the county of Lincolnshire and consists of a new national hive and a stock of bees.

At the last AGM of Lincolnshire Beekeepers Association on March 17th 2012 the Leslie Thorne Award was given to one of our youngest members, Olivia Willey.  Olivia is 11 years old and has had an increasing involvement with bees and with the Louth District since the age of seven.

Her father Guy, joined the Louth  District some years ago  after taking a beginners’ course locally.

Olivia is a pupil at the Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Alford and her age and school commitments restrict her attendance at the evening meetings of Louth BKA but from her early interest she has attended day time events such as open days and demonstration sessions. She also helps her father at his hives whenever possible. Last year Olivia assisted Guy when he delivered a talk about bees to a Young  Farmers’ group and to Alford W.I. Her main task for these was to give Guy guidance with IT.

Olivia has had entries in the local honey show in the candle-making , photography and cookery classes – in fact she won the cookery class last year.

Olivia will be mentored with  her new hive over the next year and we all wish her well with her new bees.
